A school event that loses power does not stop being the school's responsibility. The gym goes dark, the scoreboard dies, the concession stand loses its registers, and several hundred people look at the staff. Knowing what happens next, and what a backup generator can and cannot do, is part of planning any large school event.

What actually fails when the power drops?

Lighting fails first and matters most, because it controls whether people can move safely. Sound and scoreboards fail next, which matters for the event but not for safety. Heating, refrigeration and point-of-sale equipment fail quietly in the background. The school's emergency lighting covers exits and stairs, but it is not there to save the game.

Who decides whether the event continues?

Not the crowd and not the coach. The decision sits with whoever runs the building that evening, usually the athletic director or a site administrator, working with the facility staff who know what the building can do. Their question is not "can the game go on" but "can everyone leave safely and can the building protect the people still inside."

What does a backup generator actually cover?

A generator is sized to a load, and a school gym's load is bigger than it looks. Backup systems in public buildings are typically installed to run life-safety loads: exit lighting, fire alarms, some corridors, the systems that must never stop. Running a full scoreboard, concession equipment and gym lighting is a different and much larger job, which is why most events end rather than switch over.
