A Presentation That Survives Questions
How a student turns a finished science fair project into a short talk that holds up to judges' questions and still works for classmates.

A science fair project is not finished when the backboard is printed. It is finished when your student can stand in front of it and answer questions out loud. Preparing that talk is its own small project: pick the three points that matter, cut the explanation to time, and rehearse for the audience that will actually show up.
What makes a project question testable?
Everything in the talk hangs on the question the project asked. A testable question names a thing that can change and a thing that can be measured: not "do plants like music" but "does a measured amount of sound change a measured rate of growth." If the question was fuzzy, the talk will be fuzzy, so the first preparation step is writing the question on one line and checking that a number could answer it.

How long should a student presentation be?
Shorter than the student thinks. Judges at a school fair give each project a few minutes, and a talk that fills every second of them leaves no room for the questions that actually score points. A working shape is ninety seconds of prepared talk, then questions, then a second short answer prepared in advance for the most likely question.
Rehearse the ninety seconds against a clock, not against a feeling. A student who has said the opening out loud ten times at home will still be nervous at the board, but the first sentence will come out on its own.
How do you adapt one project to judges and to classmates?
The judge and the classmate want different things from the same board. The judge is checking method: was the question testable, was the measurement honest, what would the student do next. The classmate wants the story: what was surprising, what went wrong, what it was like to run the experiment. One talk cannot serve both, so the student prepares two openers on the same board.

What should a student do when a question has no answer?
Say so, and say what would test it. Judges reward a student who can name the limit of their own project far more than a student who invents an answer. A prepared line such as "we did not measure that, and the next experiment would be..." turns a hard question into the strongest moment of the talk.

How should families rehearse in the last week?
Run three full passes at home: once for time, once with interruptions, and once with the student explaining the board to someone who has never seen it. Each pass builds a different muscle, and the third one is the dress rehearsal for the parent night crowd that is half the real audience. Then stop rehearsing and let the board carry the rest.
